Sew Kitschy BOM at Quiet Play - June Linkup

Another block stitched up for the Sew Kitschy Quilt!

June's block went pretty smoothly once I selected the fabrics. I did do one section upside-down, and rather than re-do it, I just improv'd it in & perhaps a bit askew, but I was able to use it anyway:-)

I popped this up to share with the Quiet Play Flickr Group, and I am Linking up with the other partier's at Kristy's June BOM Linky.

Check out more block work over at Lyn's weekly block linkup, BOM's Away!

This may be my only post this week. I hope to have a sandwich completed by Thursday, but I am a bit sidetracked with an onslaught of fabric taking over my sewing room - I spent a lot of time this weekend preparing fabrics for my Etsy shop and I am determined to get them all posted this week!

Hope yours is a creative week, thank you for stopping by!

Sew Kitschy Kitchen Mixer Block - Catching Up!

This weekend I was able to complete the May Sew Kitschy block from Kristy at Quiet Play's BOM.
I love this block even though, for me, this was the most challenging so far. I wish I had used a darker gray for the inside of the bowl, as I see some of those shared on the Flickr group have done, but I will be able to better define it when quilting. I had to rip seams a few times. Even with that, I still like using the tracing paper foundation - for the ease of removal.

I have no experience in paper foundation piecing and wonder if I am alone in the use of tracing paper?

Foundation Piecing a State Fair Star Block

Zoom  Zoom Zoom and it is Monday again!

Time again to share blocks over at What a Hoot for BOM's Away!
In comparison to the Sew Kitschy BOM Blocks I have been sewing from Kristy at Quiet Play, things were a bit shakier with this pattern for the State Fair Block! The paper sheets I used are from Lynn Graves, published with permission from a Judy Martin Book from 1990, Scraps, Blocks, and Quilts. (I probably even have it - I will have to check!) .
I have had this pack of sheets for ages, it will make a zillion 10" blocks. The lines drawn on the pattern are the cutting lines, and you have to remember to sew 1/4" to the left the printed lines.

It just seemed a bit trickier with all the sections, and it wasn't as easy to remove the paper as the tissue paper (!) I have been using, but really it came out nicely and I am pleased:-)
It has been added to my growing pile of Aurifil Blocks !

I will be participating in The Blogger's Quilt Festival coming up (May 16) at Amy's Creative Side,

Will you be there too?

Sew Kitschy Coffee Pot - April BOM

It seems my foundation piecing skills are improving, well, my confidence at least :-)
This month I chose to alter the pattern for the Sew Kitschy Block of the Month led by Kristy at Quiet Play. Ever have the urge to change a pattern up for your own quilts? As I make this quilt I have in mind the property I visited in the summer's of my childhood; my Grandfather's cabin in Canada. I am going for a rustic and simple vibe. Enamel hot pots came to mind when I saw that this month's block is a tea pot. Putting my vision to paper was easy enough. Figuring out the reverse image and sections seemed a bit more complicated than I had thought, so I just dug in, starting with Kristy's pattern for the lid and knob. From there, I improv-pieced, just wingin' it!

Bet you didn't even notice the counter isn't level!!
hmm, maybe you did...

Here is how they are all coming together...

Yep, looking at it gives me Cabin Fever ;-)

Lotsa Blocks Completed!

I am on my game this month, but I still managed to miss the goal setting linkup with ALYOF! Aghh! I am 0/3, and this'll be the third month I won't be eligible for the lovely giveaway's.

It has been busy here with family visiting, but I did manage to get Hello Moon sandwiched, and yesterday I started in quilting the blocks and stars. I am determined to finish up Hello Moon by the end of the month and join the finishing party!

I have actually finished my BOM's for March, and will be linking up with Lyn at What a Hoot's BOM's Away to share them :-)

Sew Kitschy: The March block went smoothly, although I did not notice that the white pieces I found in my scrap bin are actually two different colors. Thankfully, the white one landed in the center. I have been playing with tissue paper as my foundation and rather like it. Linking this with Kristy at Quiet Play:-)

I love this month's Aurifil block, designed by Emily Herrick, I found the pattern HERE. I did revise the second border to add the star framing my house. I have blocks of my own I plan to add to this sampler I will have to share down the road. For now, I am linking this March block with the Aurifil Flickr Group

Next, I added borders to two blocks from the Add a Border Swap I participate in:
The first one seemed pretty vintage, so I added a selvedge from the Smithsonian Institute.
And I think I chose well with the yellow for this one:-)

OK, one more for the road: In trying to clean my sewing room, I have trouble throwing things out. When I came across this leftover practice piece, I decided to practice my machine binding skills, and finished it as a doll size quilt. The neat thing is I can now mail this to my Grand Niece, and she will have a quilt for her dolly that matches one at her house:-) Sweet!

Thank you for visiting!!

BOM's Away!

I finished up my February Sew Kitschy Block!
I am getting more comfortable with paper foundation piecing :-)  I have found that choosing fabrics I do not have much of makes it a bit more challenging - um, 10" squares from layer cakes!

The colors I used were inspired by the S & P shakers we kept in our camping box as a kid. Assuming you did not have a set in your camping box, I found a pic to share:
OK, so it is not quite a match, but these are what I was thinking of when I pulled the fabrics. Good thing I did not look at a picture first, who knows what I would have come up with,

I also whipped up this Mother's Day Block over the weekend. It is part of a monthly block tutorial series - each month is hosted by a different blogger. Designed by Amy at Stitchery Dickory Dock,  I love the color selection and placement, so I kept mine very similar to hers. I shared it with the Aurifil Thread Flickr Group for a chance to win a big box of Aurifil Thread! I found the pattern HERE.
Sew sweet...
I used to have a dog like that, mine was a Jack Russell.

I also wanted to share my Hello Moon flimsy today, but it is still on my design wall:
The blocks are all complete and squared. I've taken couple days to consider adding a 1" sashing with the dark fabric in each block. I have 90% decided now to whip it up as-is.

I just finished the block on the lower-right as well. It will be a pillow, a Christmas gift:-)

Linking up with several parties on this lovely (sunny, 68degrees) Monday morning:

BOM's Away Kitschy QAL: Block One!

I finally made my fabric decision and whipped up the first block to link up with the cool & Kitschy QAL at Quiet Play. I went with fabrics that remind me of my own childhood. This block reminds me of my Grandpa's rustic cabin in Canada, back in the 70's.
For a beginning paper-piecer, it went together pretty well. I was a bit stingy cutting into that way-vintage print, so I did have a couple close calls in which I was left with barely enough fabric.

I also finished Grandmother's Garden Block #23! Photo is not the best, but it is a cute block, meant to help tie in some of the other fabrics.
One or two more of these to go and I can start putting this puppy together!
Hopefully I will have a photo of all the blocks for the February linkup at Hydee's InHand EPP Party at Splish Splash Stash! I will play with a couple options, but I am leaning toward bone, or ivory solid.

I am linking up my blocks today with Lyn at What a Hoot for BOM's Away. Her post today has photographs of her adorable new kitten:-)
And Quilts.
of course.

Happy New Year!

Quiet Play
Sew Kitschy BOM starts today over at Quiet Play!

This quilt is irresistible & I am too excited to start a new BOM for 2014!

I am still debating my fabric scheme. I first thought of the green & orange stack I have on a shelf for no particular reason other than eye candy (violet would be fun to splash into this) ..

Hmm, retro brights would be fun for this quilt too...
I began thinking of the blocks in a way reminiscent of my own childhood when I found a couple of 70's style prints in my stash.
I had trouble capturing the actual color of those, hence the flash. Here they are with some Road15 and Reunion ..
The bundle currently looks like this, with the 'standby' stack on the right. These colors take me right into childhood kitchens:-)
I better decide quickly though, I am off right now to print the first pattern!

I am linking up today with Barbara of Cat Patches, for the final NewFO Party for 2013! I have added some new strips to last month's NewFO,
I first introduced this last month and progress has been slow. I was feeling a bit hesitant about the color palette for my mother, and sure enough, she replied that it is a bit busy for her.  Although I do have a few more triangles done, I am really uncertain where I am going with this now. I will continue playing with options, but I still like the large wonky squares. Oh, and not to offend my mother, but this quilt has been renamed: Not My Mama's Quilt.

Would you like me to make a custom crafted gift for you? Do you love the Pay it Forward concept? There are still openings!! Please see my Craft it Forward 2014 post to sign up!
