OMG It's Finished Party! January 2015

Dearest Quilty Goal-Setter's,
It is time to celebrate our January accomplishments!

I am thrilled at the response to the inaugural goal-setting party!
Old and new friends alike: Thank you all for linking up!

Sparkly, FAT prizes are fun to offer each month, to help keep everyone motivated of course! I am working on it, and I am aiming for UNIQUE!
Slowly, I am delving into the world of sponsorship. As far as advertisement goes, I intend to seek & select shops that interest me. Products that will, hopefully, excite you too!
And Guess what?
I found a shop that fits the bill!

I am very very pleased to announce our first sponsor of OMG:

Bagmaker Supply is a Chicago-based shop currently on Etsy. They provide a wonderful variety of professional-quality purse hardware: magnetic closures & snaps, zippers, metal feet & corners, grommets, rings, handles, turn-locks & clasps, buckles, and more hard-to-find supplies!

YAY! This means we have some bag-making to look forward to! So excited, (smirk), I went right to work creating my Daily Dot when I heard the news:
First things first though - one goal at a time, haha:)
How are those January goals coming along? I can hardly wait to see your lovely finishes!
I hit my target and will post final pics of Primarily Circles in the next few days. Until then, I will just pat my own back ;)

The linky is open through January 31st...
The winner of the Valentine bundle will be drawn by random number and notified by email on Feb. 1st.
OK! Put the peddle down - Lets Party!

Sew Simple Saturday & OMG, an Announcement!

Quick storage tip this morning, to share over at Jan's Sew Simple Saturday!

I have noticed the new product for storing bobbins together with their proper spools, and it does look pretty cool..
Amazon sells them for nearly a buck apiece...

Why not save a buck when pipe cleaners can be used for this task! I stocked up on extra bobbins through eBay, and I can keep threads together with multiple bobbins, all with one pipe cleaner!

I still keep a lot of thread on the rack my DH made for me, and it has nice long nails that allow bobbins to be kept with many of my spools.
Some spools are too big for this though, and since acquiring a second machine, a lot of my spools have two different bobbins. Now I keep many of my quilting threads in drawers near my Juki:)

Share your Nifty tip or tutorial by linking up this weekend over at Sew and Sow Farm - You will be entered for the chance to win several prizes!! Jan has shared a cute tutorial for a knitting needle case!

Quick announcement:

I have not stopped thinking about the loss of ALYoF's since first reading about it several days ago! Seriously, I have been grieving!!
Sooo,

I am working this weekend to launch OMG: One Monthly Goal. It will follow a very similar format!

This morning I created my first-ever button!
You can grab it from my sidebar if you like!
I have also created an OMG page for my top tab-bar, and once I have that all written up I will create the first post, a giveaway for the first month, and inLinks...
I am so excited!!

And one more tip!

I found a great little site for making the button with the html code. Check out The Grab Button Builder if you are interested!

The Journey of Donna's Stars: A Finished Quilt with a Cautionary Tale

Today I share the bittersweet story of a finished quilt.
"Sweet" because it is finished.
The story of it's journey is a bit of a "Bitter" one for me though, due to a bleeding nightmare that resulted in the faded colors pictured above.

It all began in March 2014, with some of Donna's favorite batiks, pre-washed and cut into strips.
Blocks were completed and I posted layout options in June 2014.
So, it was 18 months in the quilting - different sections at a time and continuously interrupted by other projects while I made decisions about how to quilt different areas.
Look how pretty those colors were!
Here is where the nightmare began:
Once quilted, the quilt came out pretty square and flat. Because all the fabrics were pre-shrunk, I thought I would skip the tub-bath and blocking process I often use before I attach binding. I had set red fabric aside for the binding but it did not look pre-washed when i went to use it. I couldn't really recall, so I gave it a hand wash and the water turned bright red. I rinsed and washed three more times, and the water continued to turn red.
The reds were purchased in 2014 from my local quilt shop, just for this quilt.
Top of the line (Bali's?)
I read, and read, whatever I could find online about saving quilts...

And then I went about dealing with it:
I purchased Synthrapol at the art supply store. My LSC does not stock it, nor do they provide any advice in dealing with bleeding fabrics, nor did they seem to care one bit about the fabric culprit I kindly reported to them, that is still shelved in their store...hmph...

It is advised online to use Synthrapol with hot water and as much water as possible. I started by using the product to wash the red binding fabric by hand and I was able to rinse it out with clear water results.
Encouraged, I took the quilt to the Suds Shop...
I wasn't sure if I should use fabric magnet sheets in combination with the Synthrapol, but I did, and I could see them turning color in the machine while it worked.
After holding my breath for 28 minutes, the background looked pretty white when I took it out.
I folded the damp sandwich in some muslin, and felt hopeful as I packed her into the car.
Once home, I blocked it out on linoleum flooring.
Unfortunately, it was only a couple hours before the dreaded dyes began bleeding through to the backside of the quilt. Pictured here while still damp, as the dye began to seep..
I thought maybe not all the Synthrapol had rinsed out, perhaps continuing to draw dye out as it dried.
A bit forlorn, yet I persevered:
Next, I attached the binding and finished it by hand.
Back at the laundromat, we shot a before picture. Most of the damage was directly behind the red fabrics. This photo only shows the bleeding to the back of the multi-colored star.
Plus two areas of red in the background, on the frontside.
The Synthrapol wash was repeated, and the red spots were still there. I then resorted to a back up plan, a color-out product I had picked up at the grocery.
Following directions on the package, I gave her another wash and it did work to remove dye from the White Kona.
Once dry, it was ready for final inspection. I noticed the faded colors, but nothing doing. Finishing Donna's Stars was my December goal for A Lovely Year of Finishes, as well on my Q4 list, and I was in a bit of a rush to package and ship, so it was a quick trip outside for photographs !
The random spots are gone and although a wee bit of dye is present on the back, the bleeding is far less noticeable overall.
However, the fabrics do have quite a bit of fading.

Here is what I really want to share with you:
I think the fading could have been avoided.
Just last week, after washing my quilt, I found this great article by Vicki Welsh. I encourage you to click the button, read Vicki's advice, and save the article!

Daily DOTS Quilt Block Progress & ALYoF December Goal

I am making progress each day with my Daily Dots Quilted Journal. This is a really fun sewalong at Quilty Folk, called Quilty 365. I made the Mourning Ring following the San Bernardino shootings. Every Friday, I decided, will be Favorite Fabric Friday, and I chose my favorite Kaffe green for that day. The crows are a result of the over-dyeing I did last week; I started the jewelry roll on Saturday and made my daily dot with leftovers. The last dot shown is Donna's favorite fabric and it represents my December goal for A Lovely Year of Finishes. Donna's Star Quilt has been my goal with this linkup several times over the past two years, so please don't roll your eyes..
It is nearing the homestretch this time and I am going for a complete finish, binding and all.
I promise.
haha.

Reminder!!

Sew Mama Sew's Giveaway Day begins on the 9th!

Cozy Christmas Quilt Sandwich

This is an accomplishment I can say for certain would not have happened were it not for the monthly goal setting we do at ALYoF! A bit of a scramble over the weekend, but I managed to meet my goal!
Cozy Christmas has a backing, and basting is completed!
All credit goes to Melissa, of Sew BitterSweet Designs, and Shanna, from Fiber of All Sorts for hosting A Lovely Year of Finishes! I set my GOAL and linked my post up (#40) early this month. I have three threads selected for the quilting, however the sandwich is all rolled up. There are a few projects ahead of this one, hopefully I will get to it soon - like before Christmas!
Thank you Melissa and Shanna for keeping us motivated!

Also in the works this week, I am piecing my Christmas Topper for the QAL led by Carole of From My Carolina Home. Initially this was going to be a Mystery QAL, however Carole's followers voted for a reveal. Of course, once I saw what we were to make I began playing with layout options! This first one is according to pattern layout:

Block Option ONE

Block Option TWO

Block Option THREE
I decided not to share with you my final decision! I do hope you won't lose any sleep over this, but it will remain a mystery until I reveal my topper!

I'll be sharing the suspense with Lyn at What a Hoot, for BOM's Away, and with Jen at Quilter in the Closet for Building Blocks Tuesday!

ALYoF Interrupted by Bagging It!!!

I made the cutest little zip-pouch this morning!
Really, I try to stay focused, I do, but I am continually distracted. I blame it on savvy quilter's like Patty, from Elm Street Quilts, and Carol, who blogs at From My Carolina Home, these among the many blogger's that offer sweet temptations I cannot resist...
I have not even set my goals for the month and already I am breaking them!
Seriously, where is my resolve?
It seems I have jumped right on board with the Bag It!!!
Have you seen the series at Elm Street Quilts?
Irresistible FUN! I finished the first bag, and there are more tutorials to come..

Elm Street Quilts
Thought I better share the temptation with all the friendly folk who party with Lorna at Lets Bee Social, and another tidbit I will pass on too...

Carole gave me word she will be announcing a short holiday mystery-along on Friday. (Am I hopeless?)

Are all my flimsies doomed once they are draped on a hanger?

I had a lot of trouble selecting my monthly goal for November, but the clock is ticking and it is time to put something in writing! We all know the first step to achieving a goal is to actually set one. I have two projects I am currently working on that I can not post pictures of since they are gifts, and new bags and QAL's are not in line with my Q4 FAL goals!

My goal for November's Lovely Year of Finishes is to piece a backing and sandwich my Cozy Christmas Quilt. It may seem like an easy goal, however there are several projects ahead of it so this goal will actually help push them all along. Good Luck!

ALYoF October Goal - Scrap Dance!

The Scrap Dance Mystery Quilt Along, hosted at From My Carolina Home was yet another detour from my goals this year. I find a good Mystery Quilt irresistibly FUN, and great scrap busters...
A justified distraction!
Final directions were released in September. My trusty seam ripper helped me correct some of my strips(!), and then I was ready to piece and set the blocks for my wee quilt. Baby Scrap Dance is sandwiched and queued up for quilting and I hope to get to it in time to meet this month's A Lovely Year of Finishes Goal posted at Fiber of all Sorts!

BTY, this is a beautiful pattern that really shines when a bit more contrast is used - check out more versions posted on the Flickr Group!
